Competition format
COMPETITION FORMAT
These World Championships will represent the first Olympic Qualification for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo (JPN). They will serve to qualify the best three teams from the Team Final.
There are four different competition phases in Artistic Gymnastics:
Team and individual qualifications
All-around finals
Apparatus finals
Team finals
1. Qualifications
The gymnasts will be divided into groups consisting either of team groups (for federations with teams) or of mixed groups (for federations with individual gymnasts) as per the gymnasts’ drawing of lots’ results. The location of groups into the various subdivisions (10 for men and 11 for women) and the starting order of the federation in the first rotation of each subdivision were decided by the draw.
During Qualifications, a team shall provide for not more than five gymnasts, four may compete on any single piece of apparatus and the three highest scores will be taken into account for the team total (5-4-3).
All gymnasts compete as part of a team, and/or as individual gymnasts.
NEW: Nations which registered with a team of four to five gymnasts but compete with three gymnasts only during qualifications will be considered in the team ranking in the qualification and may qualify for the team final. Nations which registered three gymnasts as individuals and requested for their results to count in the team ranking in the qualification may also qualify for the team final.
The results of the qualification competition are not carried forward to any final (start from zero) and are used to qualify gymnasts for:
2. Team Finals
The eight teams having obtained the highest total scores in the qualification take part in this competition. A team consists of max. five gymnasts. Three gymnasts compete on each apparatus. All scores will be added together for the total (5-3-3).
The working order is based on the results of the qualifying competition.
The NEW working order of the eight qualified men’s and women’s teams will be as follows: Gymnasts from two teams compete alternately one after the other on each apparatus: e.g. SUI-QAT-SUI-QAT-SUI-QAT.
3. All-around Finals
The best 24 gymnasts from qualifications will qualify for the All-around final with a maximum of two gymnasts per federation, and with four reserve gymnasts standing by.
4. Apparatus Finals
The best eight gymnasts per apparatus from qualifications will qualify to participate in the Apparatus Finals with a maximum of two gymnasts per federation and with three reserve gymnasts per apparatus standing by.
In apparatus finals, the starting orders will be determined as per the drawing of lots.
TIE BREAKING RULES (ACCORDING TO FIG TECHNICAL REGULATIONS 2018)
Qualification to all finals: In the case of a tie, at any place the tie will be broken as follows:
Qualification for All-around Finals
In case of a tie, in points at any place for qualification for the All-around final, the ranking will be determined by the following criteria:
1. The gymnast with the highest sum of the final apparatus scores obtained will prevail (i.e. add the total of the 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 of the highest final apparatus scores for men / the total of the 3, 2, 1 highest final apparatus scores for women
2. If they remain tied, the highest total E-score by adding all apparatus will prevail
3. If they remain tied, the highest total D-score by adding all apparatus will prevail
If they remain tied, the gymnasts will share the same classification.
Qualification for Apparatus Finals
In case of a tie in points, at any place on any apparatus, except for Vault, in qualification for apparatus finals, the ranking will be determined by the following criteria:
1. the gymnast with the highest E-score prevails
2. the gymnast with the highest D-score prevails
If they remain tied, the gymnasts will share the same classification
In case of a tie in points, at any place on Vault, in qualification for the apparatus finals, the ranking will be determined by the following criteria:
1. the highest of the 2 vaults before the average for the final score
2. the highest E-score of either vault performed
3. the highest D-score of either vault performed
If there is still a tie, the tie will not be broken.
Qualification for Team Finals
In case of a tie, in points at any place in qualification for the team final, the ranking will be determined by the following criteria:
1. The team with the highest sum of the team apparatus counting scores obtained will prevail (i.e. the total of 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 highest apparatus team scores for men and the total of 3, 2, 1 highest apparatus team scores for women)
If they remain tied the teams will share the same classification.
All-around Final
In case of a tie, in points at any place in the All-around finals, the ranking will be determined by the following criteria:
1. The gymnast with the highest sum of the final apparatus scores obtained will prevail (i.e. add the total of the 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 of the highest final apparatus scores for men / the total of the 3, 2, 1 highest final apparatus scores for women
2. If they remain tied, the highest total E-score by adding all apparatus will prevail
3. If they remain tied, the highest total D-score by adding all apparatus will prevail
If they remain tied, the gymnasts will share the same classification.
Apparatus Finals
In case of a tie, in points of the final score at any place on all apparatus except for Vault, the ranking will be determined by the following criteria:
1. the gymnast with the highest E-score prevails
2. the gymnast with the highest D-score prevails
If they remain tied, the gymnasts will share the same classification.
Vault Final
In case of a tie in points of the final score at any place on Vault in the apparatus finals, the rank will be determined by the following criteria:
1. the highest of the 2 vaults before the average for the final score
2. the highest E-score of either vault performed prevails
3. the highest D-score of either vault performed prevails
If they remain tied, the gymnasts will share the same classification.
Team Final
In case of a tie, in points at any place in the team finals, the ranking will be determined by the following criteria:
1. The team with the highest sum of the team apparatus counting scores obtained will prevail (i.e. the total of 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 highest apparatus team scores for men and the total of 3, 2, 1 highest apparatus team scores for women)
If they remain tied, the teams will share the same classification.
