World Gym for Life Challenge meets the world’s happiest country

Publication date : 19/07/2017

When the King Harald’s World Gym for Life Challenge begins next Wednesday at the stunning Oslofjord Convention Centre in Vestfold (NOR), the wait will finally be over for the 2,000 participants, who have long prepared their show performances for this quadrennial event.

Held for the first time in 2009 and established as one of the integral events on the FIG Gymnastics for All calendar, this year’s edition boasts a record number of participants from 23 countries. From Europe, the birthplace of Gymnastics, to South Africa, the hosts of the last World Gym for Life event, from America to Asia and Oceania, all continents will be represented at the World Gym for Life Challenge for the first time.

Norway, which was declared the world’s happiest country in the UN’s World Happiness Report earlier this year, and its coastal region of Vestfold will be the proud host of the 88 participating groups. Under the motto “Rhythm of the waves” and with the royal touch of His Majesty King Harald V of Norway, who will attend the opening ceremony, the country that has a long tradition of sending large delegations to international Gymnastics for All events now takes its turn in managing the four action-packed days of the Challenge.

During the contest, gymnasts of all ages and abilities have the opportunity to express their passion and their talent in small and large groups, whether they choose to incorporate apparatus into their routines or not. Within the limit of five minutes per performance, everything is allowed in this contest, where all kinds of Gymnastics disciplines share the same stage and a panel of experts awards points based on certain criteria.

The best rated groups will perform again at a special gala that culminates in the crowning of the World Group Champion. The winning group will be awarded the coveted Bruno Grandi trophy.
